FOR THE LOVE OF NOODLES
PERSONAL COLLECTION OF NOTEWORTHY NOODLES 🍜
SHU JIAO FU ZHOU
📍New York, New York
Finding affordable eats in New York is always a challenge, but at Shu Jiao Fu Shou you can get a plate of noodles for $3 *mind blown* They have a tendon soup with rice noodles that turned out to be my personal favorite. Everything is served in a plastic plate or bowl giving it that Asia Street Market vibe.
YUAN BAO JAOZI
📍San Francisco, California
One of my favorite beef noodle soups in San Francisco is here. It comes with well cooked beef cubed into soupy perfection. I usually order the option with pickled sweet vegetables to give it a little more oomph! This place also makes handmade dumplings with assortment of fillings and their cucumber salad is a must.
TERRA COTTA WARRIOR
📍San Francisco, California
Mouthwatering flavors with Northern China flavors. This place has hand pulled thick noodles that are cooked to chewy perfection. I enjoy their Shannxi Mian Pi is my go to. If you enjoy a soupy noodle their Qishan Minced Pork Noodle is great if you want something warm and travels well for take out. But the absolute must to get if you are there in person is the Three in one Biangbiang noodle.
NOODLE & COMPANY
📍Southington, Connecticut
Ok, before I get completely discredited as a noodle connoisseur, I mention Noodle & Company because on roadtrips my options for food are often limited to burgers. Noodle & Company has been a lifesaver because it is not that. I get stir fry vegetables and udon to boost even though I'm in the middle of Connecticut. I would recommend this if you happen to be commuting to New England and are determined to get some veggies and noodles in your diet.
GUILIN RICE NOODLE
📍Los Angeles, California
My sister and I have been obsessed with this place and has become a hometown favorite whenever we meet at home. We enjoy their MaLa sour dry noodle that comes with rice noodles, cabbage and thinly sliced beef. Their side dishes of cold potatoes and seaweed salad come with a set price that is worth ordering as well.
HAO NOODLE
📍New York, New York
I was skeptical about their noodles because Hao gave me the impression of a large chain restaurant that might sacrifice quality but I was delighted by how chewy their noodles were. I got their Dan Dan noodle that wasn't too peanut centric though a bit oily. If you are interested in additional things on the menu, I would highly recommend their shu mai. It was nothing like I have ever had.
DOUGH ZONE
📍Menlo Park, California
Although most people probably come here for their dumplings, I of course indulged in their noodles. Each of their dishes were priced around $7 and were small enough to sample a bunch. Both the dan dan noodles and hot sour noodle soup were rich in flavor and springy in texture. I also enjoyed their side dishes of sweet cucumber curls. Skip the onion pancakes, they were not particularly tasty.
UDON MUGIZO
📍San Francisco, California
Located inside Little Japan's tourist mall, is a genuine udon place that makes their own noodles. Their noodles are made from thick-cut with clean flavorful soup made of kombu. I usually get their Niku Udon or Cold Dipping Udon. Or if you are feeling explorative, they also have Uni spinach and Mentai Cream Udons.
MARUGAME UDON
📍Oahu, Hawaii
Marugame is a well-known Japanese franchise that I tried for the first time in Hawaii. It's a made-to-order, quick-service place with affordable prices. One bowl of large Udon will come out around $9.00. I usually get their Mentai Udon, my partner enjoys their Curry Udon.
NOJO RAMEN
📍San Francisco, California
Nojo is nestled in the adorable neighborhood of Hayes Valley. There is usually a wait but well worth it for thick chicken ramen broths, known to come with a whole chicken leg. The meats in the noodles are notably juicy. If you want to try something unconventional, I really enjoy their Dry Spicy Ground Chicken Tossed Noodle.
SARASHINA HORII
📍New York, New York
Known for their soba making from the 1700s, this is the only location they opened outside of Japan. Their soba comes in the traditional sarashina (buckwheat) and mori (mix of wheat and buckwheat). I ordered their dipping Kisoko Tsuke mushroom. The broth was beautifully deep and composed. The Kamonanban broth with duck and leek was also delicious
LA PECORA BIANCA
📍New York, New York
La Pecora Bianca has multiple locations in New York, but I went to the one in NoMad. They are known for their stylish interiors and market-driven Italian pastas. I ordered their Gramigna with house-made sausage, broccolini & chili flakes. It was a little over salted but overall was alright.
